Are You Low in Magnesium?
Magnesium is needed for more than 300 different enzymatic reactions in the body each day, but many of us are deficient in this mineral. Some of the signs of a magnesium deficiency include:
- Muscle pain after exercise because magnesium is essential for muscle contraction and blocks calcium. Without enough magnesium, you’re more likely to suffer from muscle aches and cramping.
- Low energy and fatigue can be linked to low magnesium levels because the mineral is used in a critical bodily process that helps energy production.
- Difficulty sleeping is another sign because magnesium is needed for restful sleep and it also helps act as a muscle relaxant.
- Magnesium is used to regulate hormonal activity and blood sugar balance which in turn can help with problems such as depression and anxiety. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter essential for a stable mood is regulated by magnesium.
Good sources of magnesium include nuts like cashews, peanuts and almonds. Avocado and whole wheat toast is another excellent source of magnesium, as is spinach, black beans, edamame and brown rice.
