Wisdom teeth extractions
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to erupt, for most people in their late teens or early twenties. When properly aligned, these teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth. However, for many people they require removal due to being misaligned, positioned horizontally or angled toward or away from the adjacent molars. They can also be ‘impacted’, which means partially or totally trapped under the soft tissue or in the jawbone.
The ease of removal depends on the tooth’s position. A wisdom tooth that is fully erupted through the gum can be extracted as easily as any other tooth. However, a wisdom tooth that is underneath the gums and embedded in the jawbone will require an incision into the gums, and possibly even bone removal.
At St George Dental we will assess your specific situation to determine whether extraction will be a simple or complicated procedure, as we may need to refer you to a specialist oral surgeon.
